Safe Sex is Bringing Sexy Back…with Hydrogel Condoms

condom, skinlike, hydrogel,

As if midterms, finals and internships weren’t enough to worry about.  Unwanted pregnancy is something that many co-eds have to deal with.  Even if it ends up just being a scare the stress of the unknown is often enough to make many people nearly join the church. Not to mention the threat of an STD. Sometimes these things happen because we are caught up in the moment or because that damned condom just makes things less enjoyable.  Salon.com reports today that a Bill and Melinda Gates grant is making the choice and experience of safe sex much better. In March of 2013 the gates foundation started a campaign for innovation in sexual health.

The focus was the condom:

…significantly preserves or enhances pleasure, in order to improve uptake and regular use. Additional concepts that might increase uptake include attributes that increase ease-of-use for male and female condoms, for example better packaging or designs that are easier to properly apply. In addition, attributes that address and overcome cultural barriers are also desired.

Their answer to the condom problem.  Hydrogels. Hydrogels found in contact lenses have a much more skin like quality.  They are thin yet tough and transparent.  Making the choice to wrap it up easier and more fun for all parties involved.  Bonus: If you are allergic to latex you will be able to use these!  This is the kind of condom that you will actually want to use!

Researchers at the University of Wollongong in Australia who received the grant for the Hydrogel condom have not perfected the manufacturing to be affordable.  They are looking at ways to use a 3-D printer to cut production costs.
