Subversions: Matthew Dear / Roman Flügel / Daniel Avery
Verboten is excited to present another edition of Subversions, Matthew Dear’s residency, with the concept of “performing with artists who inspire me by playing forward, body moving electronic music,” he states. Emerging in the early 2000s with a string of high-quality releases for Spectral Sound, Plus 8, and Perlon, Dear broke out in 2003 with the single “Dog Days.” He quickly found international success and juggled between monikers including Audien and Jabberjaw. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear is no longer tied to any one genre, and is blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy.
Roman Flügel is one of the biggest names in the German electronic music scene, and the co-founder of the Ongaku/Klang/Playhouse labels. Active since the early 1990’s, Flügel is a chameleon dabbling in many styles from house to techno, electro and leftfield. Music comes naturally to L.A. duo Classixx, childhood friends who began recording together in 2007, united by their mutual appreciation for melody, punk rock, disco and French house. Classixx excels at cutting sunny grooves, blithe melodies bred by the coast and coaxed out by the surf, creating a sound that is expertly crafted for road trips, pool parties and dance clubs.
Wes James aka Le Youth has a signature sound that lights up dance floors and radio stations around the globe. The leisurely grooves, airy synthesizers, and pop hooks of a song like his debut single “C O O L” can easily pull a listener back to the pre-millennial, pre-Internet days when dance music offered a transcendentally blissful brand of hedonism that’s considerably harder to find on today’s EDM landscape.
